After a time springs on garage doors will either brake or lose tension. It can be quite a challenge to replace one of these high-tension springs and for those who want to do it themselves it can also be dangerous. There are different kinds, with their own kind of respective spring types and techniques for replacement. Some of the kinds of springs on garage doors are extension, tension or they can even be a combination of both of these types of springs. Double garage doors with overhead springs have torsion springs that are mounted to a central bracket in the middle of the garage door. So it's important to know what to do when springs need replacement.
So if you have problems with spring first of all close the door. Afterwards you want to unplug the opener from the power source. If the opener is hardwired to the main electrical system make sure to remove the opener's fuse or disconnect the circuit breakers for the garage area. Then disconnect the garage opener from the door. Keep in mind that newer models mostly have a neutral position so you can place the opener in while replacing the springs. Older models may need to have the opener disconnected.
Be sure to check that the replacement spring and the old spring are the same size. While the old springs are still in place measure their length and diameter and compare these with the new springs. Then take a piece of chalk and mark the location of the spring. To release the tension on the garage door bar unwind the old springs and then insert a winding bar into one of the winding cone holes. Be sure that they bar is at least 18 inches and is the right diameter for your winding cone. Take the spring setscrew and unscrew it then pull down on the winding bar. Take a second winding bar and insert it into another hole while you are holding down the other bar. Release the first bar and pull down on the second and repeat this until the spring is unwound and there is no more tension on the bar.
The stationary end of the spring is anchored to the centre of the door so remove the bolts and loosen the setscrews from the cable drums found at the end of the garage door. Afterwards remove the drums, and slide the springs off the bar. Now you're ready to slide on the new spring and make sure that the side with the bigger hole which is the stationary side goes in first. Take the cable drum and reassemble it and then repeat steps 1 to 5 for the other spring. At this point you'll insert the garage door bar into the cable drum and tighten the shaft by twisting the bar.
You'll take and fix the stationary end of the torsion spring to the centre of the door and tighten the bolts and be sure that the stationary cone is flush with the anchor's bearing plate. The new spring will be wound up onto the garage bar the reverse way from which you unwound the old spring. Then insert a winding bar and push up and insert a second bar all the while holding the first bar in place and push up. You'll repeat this until the spring is wound and it reaches the mark you made in Step 1.
